Barite Spar

Mineral Family:
Type:
Natural
Iron-stained massive barite exhibiting coarse sparry cleavage surfaces. The brown to honey-coloured tones are produced by iron oxide staining within the barite. Barite commonly forms in hydrothermal veins and altered sedimentary rocks, and its high density and prominent cleavage distinguish it from similarly coloured silica varieties such as carnelian. The historical label “barite spar” reflects traditional mineralogical terminology for coarse crystalline barite.
