Natural

Fine-grained alabaster variety of gypsum from the Keuper Marls (Triassic). Classic British material collected from Penarth Cliffs, a historically significant geological locality.

This is alabaster, a fine-grained, massive variety of gypsum valued historically for carving and ornamental use. Unlike crystalline gypsum, alabaster lacks visible crystal faces and forms as compact, uniform masses.

The specimen originates from the Keuper Marls, sedimentary deposits formed during the Triassic Period in arid, evaporitic environments. Gypsum precipitated from evaporating saline waters, recording ancient climatic conditions. This piece provides a clear example of evaporite mineral formation and sedimentary sulphate deposits.
