Hematite (botryoidal habit)

Solaria Collections, Chris Fraser

CF0004

Origin:

Para Para, Golden Bay, South Island, New Zealand

Measurements:

46g
29 x 24 x 31mm

Type:

Natural

A well-developed botryoidal hematite specimen displaying classic rounded, grape-like surface forms (“kidney ore”). The botryoidal surface exhibits a dark steel-grey to blue-black sheen with subtle iridescent highlights, characteristic of finely crystalline hematite grown from iron-rich fluids. The interior and broken surfaces show a denser, massive hematite texture. Botryoidal hematite from the Para Para district is associated with iron oxide deposition in hydrothermal and weathering environments. Such specimens form through repeated precipitation of iron oxides from solution, producing concentric growth layers and smooth rounded forms.
