This specimen consists of a dark, massive iron-rich sulfide material hosted in altered country rock. The surface shows a dull metallic to sub-metallic lustre with extensive reddish-brown to orange oxidation, typical of iron sulfides that have been exposed to weathering. Small granular and fractured textures suggest the original sulfide minerals have partially altered to iron oxides and hydroxides (such as limonite or goethite). The overall appearance closely resembles iron sulfide material recorded from the historic Lyall mineral collections, particularly from mineralised zones in the Takaka district where hydrothermal fluids deposited sulfide minerals along fractures and shear zones.
