Nickel Ore (oxidised)

Lyall Collection

LYALL-007

Origin:

Unknown

Mineral Family:

Mineral Family:

Type:

Natural

Partial label suggests Nickel but location unknown. Weathered nickel-bearing ore with iron oxide staining, likely derived from ultramafic rocks. Nickel occurs in secondary oxidised phases rather than visible primary sulfides.

This specimen represents oxidised nickel ore, where primary nickel-bearing minerals have been altered by weathering processes near the surface. The earthy textures and yellow-brown to greenish staining reflect secondary oxidation products rather than unaltered metallic minerals.

Such ores commonly develop above ultramafic rocks and nickel sulphide deposits, where prolonged exposure to oxygen and water transforms original minerals into complex oxide and hydroxide assemblages. This piece provides insight into supergene alteration processes affecting nickel deposits.
