This specimen displays green to blue-green copper mineralisation formed through the oxidation of primary copper sulphides near the Earth’s surface. Chrysocolla and malachite commonly develop together in the weathering zones of copper deposits, where oxygen-rich groundwater alters earlier sulphide minerals.
The earthy to botryoidal textures and mixed green hues reflect secondary mineral growth rather than crystalline copper ores. Such specimens are important indicators of near-surface copper enrichment and are frequently associated with historic prospecting areas in New Zealand.
