This specimen consists of white to translucent quartz hosting metallic pyrite and galena mineralisation. The quartz forms the primary gangue, within which sulphide minerals crystallised from hydrothermal fluids moving through fractures in the host rock. Pyrite appears as brassy yellow metallic patches and grains, while galena occurs as lead-grey, high-density metallic inclusions. Galena is New Zealand’s principal lead ore and is commonly associated with silver-bearing systems, while pyrite is one of the most widespread sulphide minerals in hydrothermal environments. The assemblage reflects classic hydrothermal vein mineralisation, where hot, mineral-rich fluids deposited sulphides as they cooled within quartz veins.
