This specimen is composed of crystalline quartz lining cavities within the host rock, forming a drusy texture of tightly packed, small quartz crystals. Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust and forms in a wide range of geological environments, commonly crystallising from silica-rich fluids circulating through fractures and voids in rock. At Solly’s Quarry in Golden Bay, quartz typically occurs in association with hydrothermal veins related to regional metamorphism and fault-controlled fluid movement. The interlocking crystal growth seen here reflects relatively slow cooling and repeated pulses of silica-bearing fluids, allowing crystals to nucleate and grow on cavity walls.
