Mineral Family:

Mineral Family:

Type:

Fossil

Fossil gastropod Struthiolaria sp. 'Ostrich Foot'. Original label reads 'Loc. Anatoria', interpreted as Anatori, Golden Bay - a well-known Miocene fossil locality. Specimens match typical Struthiolaria morphology from the region.

These fossils are identified as Struthiolaria, a genus of marine gastropods commonly referred to as “ostrich feet” due to their distinctive shell morphology. The preserved whorls and thickened shell structures reflect adaptation to shallow marine environments.

Specimens from the Anatori area are typically preserved in sedimentary rocks deposited during periods of marine transgression. These fossils provide valuable insight into New Zealand’s paleo-marine ecosystems and are commonly used in stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental studies.
