Tumbled Stones

Lyall Collection

LYALL-011

Origin:

Unknown

Mineral Family:

Mineral Family:

Type:

Tumbled

This vial contains a small assortment of tumbled stones, representing multiple rock and mineral types that have been mechanically rounded and smoothed. Tumbling mimics natural abrasion processes such as fluvial transport or coastal wave action, producing rounded forms with softened edges and enhanced surface polish.

Mixed tumbled specimens are commonly used in educational contexts to illustrate differences in colour, texture, hardness, and durability between rock types, as well as to demonstrate the effects of mechanical weathering. While individual stones are not identified to species level, the collection as a whole serves as a comparative reference sample.
